Surviving or Thriving…Which Will It Be?
How fortunate we are that the serious questions and problems on a day to day basis involve our purchasing and investing decisions, who should be dating who and why, and what we’re going to do this weekend.
Not so long ago, the major questions asked daily were “how and what are we going to eat today”, “how will we survive the winter”, and “how will we avoid being killed today”?
Things of such little importance have become so important that our original fight and flight response designed to help us survive has evolved into anger and fear, based on relatively meaningless events in our environment which we interpret to be life and death. Stress has become the name of the game as a result, leading to all kinds of nasty ailments and behaviors which plague humanity.
The truth is that for a lot of us, all of our physical needs have been met better than any king throughout time. We no longer have to worry about survival; we can now focus on thriving.
Yet, most of us do not because it takes a higher level of consciousness to recognize and achieve this. We find jobs because they will provide us money and social status, which is now the currency of old and what used to determine life and death.
Decades from now people will not be judged based on how much money they have, what kind of car they drive, or the relative social status their profession grants them. They will be judged based on the life they live, and the difference they make.
The truth is that most jobs, once one gains adequate experience, can provide the means to support a family comfortably (unless of course they’re consumed by our materialistic culture and convinced they need to buy an iPhone for their 10 year old child).
Thriving means living at a higher level than survival mode. It means being deeply passionate about your work, and going to bed at night knowing you made a real difference in the world during your day. It means fighting to find your dream partner, and working to grow your relationship every single day. It means spending quality time developing yourself into an honorable and conscious human being, capable of raising equally honorable and conscious children. It means learning about nature and the universe, taking time to ask the big questions and figure out what really matters to you.
Now, more than any other time before on this planet, we have the opportunity to THRIVE. Are you taking advantage of it?
