HALLELUJAH! Why the Present Moment Is All That Matters!

March 1, 2011
presence-of-God

After a nice long break from school and blogging, I’m back! Don’t worry; I missed you readers just as much, if not more, than you missed me ;)

So, everyone talks about why the present moment is all that matters. Read Eckhart Tolle (or any book on personal development), watch “Peaceful Warrior”, or simply observe in movies or real life when people do their best work, or are in “the Zone”. It’s because they’re present. Nothing else matters to them but that single moment in time, and it’s perfect.

We can all relate and do indeed experience this sometimes, very rarely in fact, through sports, meditation, or working on something we love. Have you ever you lifted your head after finishing a project and realized that 2 hours somehow rolled by? It’s because you were focused intensely on the present moment.
Great spiritual leaders say that we should work towards being present all the time, since the present moment is all that really matters in life. My problem with this is that I’m so ambitious that if I’m present all the time, how will I achieve all my big goals, and dream about how perfect my life will be when I achieve them…

After all, these great leaders also say that we must do what we’re passionate about so we can be fulfilled and make a difference in the world (this requires lots of work, discipline, and planning).
I think I may have just stumbled across my answer in my morning meditation for why the present moment is all that matters, and how it fits in with achieving my dreams.

It has to do with death.

Prior to my meditation, I watched a 5 minute video of Brendan Burchard (a great speaker, author, and trainer) speaking about the 3 questions he asks himself everyday which he came up with as a result of a near death experience, which got me thinking about how we could literally die any moment of any day.

If that’s true, and I could die later today, or tonight, or tomorrow, and one of these days I will be right and that will happen, then…

WHY THE HELL WOULD I WORRY ABOUT MY PAST OR FUTURE???

I should be savoring every last moment I have on earth, because my times counting down, whether I like it or not!!!

All the crappy experiences I’ve had in the past that I like to replay in my mind (and which only bring me down) DON’T MATTER!!!

Whether or not I achieve all those massive goals (that stress me out) DOESN’T MATTER!!!

All that matters is enjoying each and every person I come into contact with, every move I make, every game I play, everything I learn, every bite of food I take…every single experience the Universe gives me (for it is all truly a gift) should be savored and enjoyed as if it were the most delicious meal I can imagine.

That’s all that matters.

Now of course we must still use our mind as a tool to achieve those goals, do what we love, be fulfilled, and make a difference in the world, but that’s for my next post.

Here’s the video I was talking about:
